The Northern Kentucky Cheerleading Coaches Association’s annual competition is celebrating its 20th year this year!

The competition will be held on Feb. 4, 2012 at the Bank of Kentucky Center at Northern Kentucky University. The competition will feature 113 performances this year! Thanks to Gayle Trame for always volunteering to organize such a great local event.

Congrats to the University of Cincinnati cheerleaders, who placed 13th in the 2012 UCA National College Cheerleading Championships in Division IA, and to the Northern Kentucky University cheerleaders, who placed 6th in Small Co-Ed Division II.

The University of Cincinnati Dance Team placed 3rd in Pom and 3rd in Hip Hop in Division IA dance.

The Ohio State University cheerleaders placed 9th in the same division, and University of Kentucky cheerleaders took home another first place title. You can watch all the performances on Varsity TV.

Meet the Oak Hills High School Varsity Cheerleaders! Cheer Cincy caught up with them for their first game of basketball season and one of their biggest games of the year versus Elder High School. There was a huge turnout for the game! At the time of this interview, the Varsity squad was practicing for competitions at Centerville High School and at GMCE’s competition in Troy. Their competition squad is optional for school squad members.

Oak Hills cheerleaders are often recognizable for their red, plaid skirts – but they also have “regular” uniforms, which they’re wearing in this video. They have a great tradition of assigning Varsity cheerleaders to new cheerleaders in the Big Sister / Little Sister program. The older girls make sure the younger ones know their way around the school and learn all their cheers.

CE has partnered with Avid Impact seeking your assistance in bringing Christmas to less fortunate children. Donated toys should be new & unwrapped. Help make a difference this holiday season! All toys will be collected at Champion Elite (under the tree) no later than December 22nd. All toys will be donated to families in the Warren County community. We would like to make a huge impact on those in need this Christmas season! Avid Impact is a wonderful non-profit organization that aids in assisting families in need for everything from food and clothing to school supplies and much more! Cheer Cincy caught up with the Campbell County High School cheerleaders on their football Senior Night, 2011. The high school seniors were sad to see football season end, but they did a great job cheering at the game! The cheerleading sweatshirts that the seniors are wearing were their gifts from the rest of the cheerleading squad — Aren’t they cute?

Believe it or not, this was the FIRST competition for these Cincinnati Christian High School seniors! They did a great job at The Greater Midwest Cheer Expo’s Pink Ribbon Cheer and Dance Championships, coming first place in their division. Meet the cheerleaders of Carroll County High School in Carrollton, Kentucky. This Varsity Squad performed at The Greater Midwest Cheer Expo’s Pink Ribbon Cheer & Dance Championships at Fairfield Arena in 2011.

Congratulations to all the squads that competed at the GMCE Pink Ribbon Cheer and Dance Championships yesterday at Fairfield Arena. The money is still being totaled, but the producers believe that they may have hit the $6,000 mark for fundraising!

1,540 athletes participated from 96 teams.

The Centerville Wee Elks recreational cheer team was the top fundraiser turning in $2,000.  With 33 girls on the 3 teams, they raised money for an entire month to come up with that sum.

Ultimate Cheer of Cincinnati came in second place with another amazing donation of $1000!

Taylor Sturgeon just started her college career at the University of Cincinnati, majoring in Spanish and working hard at her part-time job when she’s not studying. But her hard work and experience in high school as a Glen Este cheerleader and dancer has stuck with her and helped her get ahead. Sturgeon was one of an outstanding group of Glen Este High School Seniors in 2011. (In their Meet the Squad feature last year, it was truly impressive how supportive they were of each other and how close they were are a group). Sturgeon was nominated because of her hard work and the support she has shown for her fellow athletes.
As a high school senior, Taylor’s schedule was not only filled with the commitments of cheerleading training and dance rehearsal, but also working as a hostess and taking 12 credit hours at the University of Cincinnati. In fact, Sturgeon has been taking post-secondary classes at UC’s Clermont campus for the past two years. Sturgeon was also a member of National Honor Society and Spirit Club.

When it comes to graduation, she takes comfort in the fact that, due to this experience, the transition from high school to college won’t be difficult. Taylor said, “With all the practice I had in time management, I think I can handle what comes with college!”

While Sturgeon cheered and danced for Glen Este, her heart remained with cheerleading.

“I absolutely love cheering for games… it’s the crowd interaction, you really feel like you are a part of something,” Taylor said, after I asked her what she loves most about the sport. Don’t get her wrong she has grown to love stunting, and she has always had a passion for tumbling. Taylor continued, “I sort of fell into cheerleading, I never thought it would be part of my life like it is.” Taylor, although very happy with her cheer lifestyle, had a difficult decision starting out. She began gymnastics at a very young age and fell in love with the sport. However, due to a number of reasons could not continue competing. Taylor admitted, “I think I cried for days when I had to quit gymnastics, I just loved it so much.” Taylor got into cheerleading as substitute for gymnastics. What a substitute it was! Taylor is now a true believer of the phrase “everything happens for a reason.” Taylor’s passion for the sport of cheerleading and her intense work ethic are two values that Cheer Cincy likes to see in our MVCs!
