Cheerleading a Sport in Ohio?

At the Ohio Association of Cheerleading Coaches conference in May, coaches and Ohio industry leaders gathered to discuss the possibility of cheerleading being named an official sport in the state of Ohio. Concerns varied widely, with most participants agreeing that coach training should be more regulated, regardless of whether cheerleading is officially considered a sport.

Other questions were raised about whether school cheerleaders would be allowed to participate in all-star programs in addition to their school programs, whether squads could travel outside of the state to competitions, and how such a designation would affect summer camps and practice.

If you have insight into another state model that works well or have a strong opinion on this issue,  let the Ohio Association of Cheerleading Coaches know at OhioOACC@aol.com.
